The images shown here convey the idea of making visible what cannot be heard ... They document an audio walk by the Polish artist Sophie Delest, only without sound…A fascinating challenge for me as a photographer. From the accompanying text by Sophie Delest:MACZEK IN ALEPPO1st place in the international literary competition for writers writers with a migration background “Creator of Emotions 2023”, award ceremony in London. What would you take with you if you suddenly had to flee the war? Based on true stories, collected among others from the inhabitants of Braunschweig.Stanislaw Maczek: He was described as an occupier by the inhabitants of the small town of Haren and yet his portrait has been hanging in the town hall in Meppen in his memory since 1949. The Dutch king comes to his tomb to pay tribute to him. Who was this man, General Maczek? And did you know that there was a fifth occupation zone on the territory of Germany after the Second World War, namely a Polish enclave in the middle of the British occupation zone? It was first called Lvov (Lemberg), then Maczków after Stalin's protest, after its administrator, the Polish General Maczek. We have no influence on whether we live in a time of peace or war. But if we are living in a time of war, it depends on the people living in it exactly what it looks like. Is it even possible to remain still a human being on the battlefield or is a transformation into a killing machine inevitable? What does it mean for an individual to be thrown out of their quiet everyday life, to give up their dreams and having to fight for their own survival from that moment on?“Maczek in Aleppo” is not a typical historical narrative and yet it is based on many facts. It is a story of people who actually wanted to do something else in life than fight. However, fate decided otherwise for them. It is a story of home, which we carry within us both in times of peace and in times of war.The multimedia theater piece in the form of an audio walk takes you on a literary and artistic journey that is the result of over a year of collaboration with artists from Poland, Spain and Great Britain, refugees from Syria and Ukraine as well as from Syria and Ukraine and around 60 people aged 7 to 80+, all currently living in four EU countries.
